The backing behind Nate being an NF (idealist) comes from his reasons for joining the marine corps ("a Dartmouth graduate who joined the Marines in a fit of idealism" [from Wright's Generation Kill] - definitely an NF idealist thing) and the fact that he has strongly held values -- and I really didn't see him, on screen, being a bad judge of character (or ever feeling like his men's feelings weren't important). His position and ability to see when plans don't work/look at the bigger picture is an 'N' type quality, and the combination of these things definitely suggests an NF type. (coupled with his ability to be structured/attempt to follow rules as best he can -- except when it goes against his values -- and his definite leaning toward introversion, lends to INFJ.) And yes, as characters, they're definitely open to our individual interpretations of them.

The personality descriptions you suggested are actually pretty similar to the ones that I used up there -- and the click-through link on each type's name that I've set up gives a much more in-depth explanation of each type, plus, the second look links to another site that gives even more information. (:

Re: the STs, the way I have these set up is a slightly different categorization that splits up between SJs and SPs, rather than STs and SFs, and -- some of the guys who DID stay in the military for the long run (ie: Speirs) would fall in the ST category -- there is quite a bit of them listed under the STs.

I agree with you on Ray, I've been caught between ENTP and ESFP for him, but I actually ran by most of these personality types with more than one person and the general consensus had leaned toward ESFP -- it really does help to read the much longer descriptions of each, rather than the short tidbits, because not every trait is always going to fit each person perfectly -- depending on what they're developed or how close each of their preferences are to the middle line. But I'll definitely check out Gen Kill/some other people's opinions and see if there's some strong implications that Ray is an ENTP -- because I agree, I was caught between those two types for him.

As for Poke, I was caught between these two as well, but Poke strikes me as someone who is very passionate and uses his personal held values and his emotions to back up his opinions and the things he say (like, for example, all of his rants) rather than relying more on logic and rationality. The differences between Thinkers and Feelers can definitely come down to how someone makes decisions, rather than if someone's a particularly touchy feely or caring person -- there's super caring Thinkers and more aloof (especially when introverted) Feelers.

Haha, again, the wonderful thing about opening this post up to more than just myself/my f-list is that there's room for debate & discussions over characters -- which in the end, has us all thinking a bit about them, their motivations, etc, and that's wonderful inspiration for writing and whatnot. xD!
